Working in close\u00a0relation to its setting,\u00a0<em>Due qui \/ To Hear<\/em>\u00a0leads viewers through each part of the Italian\u00a0Pavilion, including the garden, in an alternation of full and empty spaces, movement\u00a0and rest, that brings\u00a0unexpected encounters\u00a0with sound-based and performative\u00a0pieces and environments.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"section\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n\r\nPlaying on a translation that seems wrong at first glance\u00a0\u2013 \u201ctwo here\u201d (in Italian,\u00a0<em>due\u00a0qui<\/em>) and \u201cto hear\u201d \u2013 the title suggests that listening, \u201clending an ear,\u201d is an\u00a0action\u00a0directed towards others. Meeting and listening, relation and sound, have been\u00a0inseparable concepts throughout the three decades of Massimo Bartolini\u2019s practice. The project, born out of a\u00a0respectful\u00a0dialogue with the Pavilion\u00a0\u2013\u00a0with no structural additions or any form of display\u00a0\u2013\u00a0takes\u00a0viewers on a\u00a0three-part path\u00a0that can be travelled in either direction, letting them move\u00a0freely within the spaces.\u00a0In Tesa 2, for instance, they are greeted by the bronze statue\u00a0of a\u00a0<em>Pensive Bodhisattva<\/em>.\r\n\r\nThis image from Buddhist art represents a person who, having attained enlightenment, voluntarily gives it up in order to show others how to get there, by embracing inactivity. This statue is emblematically placed at one end of a long recumbent column, a line of demarcation that, despite its architectural appearance, reveals its true nature as an organ pipe by producing a steady drone. What looks like a bench where visitors can gather and rest is also a point for contemplating the motion of a conical wave.
